    that you are conflating over a millennium of European history. It is a very old-fashioned view of the world of the Middle Ages, and I note that many of your sources are over 100 years old. The world of the 5th century was very different from the world of the 15th. During that time, there were substantial changes in architecture, agricultural technology, shipping, trade and craft production, etc. These changes laid the technological bases for the modern world, including the Enlightenment.
