The best Holocaust work of fiction I have read is Primo Levi's If Not Now, When? which is very powerful, especially knowing that the author was a survivor of Auschwitz....btw, if you have not, please read his Survival in Auschwitz, The Reawakening and The Drowned and the Saved for some of the best Holocaust writing.

Another novel, not about the Holocaust, but instead set against the Battle of Stalingrad by someone who was there as a journalist is Vassily Grossman's Life and Fate.  Very powerful work, which combines realistic combat scenes with a picture of life under Stalin.

To be free and just depends on us. Victor Hugo.
