  •  Oh, gawd, I'd forgotten all about Lucky Starr. (6+ / 0-)

I don't think I ever associated those with the Asimov I read later. Thanks, I think, for reminding me.

At least half the future I've been expecting hasn't gotten here yet. Sigh.... (Yes, there's gender bias in my name; no, I wasn't thinking about it when I signed up. My apologies.)

    •  Asimov was Embarressed by them too (6+ / 0-)

According to legend, he originally came up with Lucky as a treatment for a TV series.  When it didn't sell for TV, he converted them into novels because, hey!  Waste not, want not.  But he had them published under a pseudonym, "Paul French".

Of course, when the Positronic Robots programmed with the Three Laws of Robotics appeared in the later books, think people probably guessed who the author really was.

I'm not sure which embarrassed him more, the stigma of writing trashy space opera for television, or the fact that within less than a decade of publication the first generation of Mariner space probes invalidated nearly all the science he put into them.

      •  I'm not sure anything much embarrassed him. (4+ / 0-)

If he hadn't written a few good science fiction stories and novels early on, I'd be inclined to think of the good Doctor as a hack writer. An intelligent, sometimes entertaining hack, to be sure, but the sheer volume he turned out led me to wonder whether he spent any time actually thinking.
