Some of his very best writing actually went into his "juveniles" - where he was forced by his publisher to keep it short and simple and tightly focused.

Even there he was a very mixed bag. While he gets points for making Rod Walker Ambiguously Brown in Tunnel in the Sky, he loses points for his stereotypical caricature of "Uncle Albert" in Time for the Stars - and for some very sexist attitudes also.

He wasn't even that much of a trail-blazer by then, as Andre Norton had beaten him to the punch by several years, and done it better. (She didn't write "persons of color", she wrote people with different skin colors.  And she came down HARD on the stupidity of bigotry and intolerance, besides.)

    If it's
    Not your body,
    Then it's
    Not your choice
    And it's
    None of your damn business!
