"People keep themselves in the dark.", for the most part, and it might/probably is true that "There's no scheme to keep people in the dark.", up to a point. If there is a scheme, the principal perpetrators of the "scheme" are others than the media owners themselves, with few a few exceptions, but they sure are responsible for going along. Nevertheless, there has been an effort for a long time, not necessarily for nefarious reasons but as you say for profit reasons, to turn news into entrainment. The bottomline is that we live in a very ill informed society. BTW, this is not a uniquely American problem or phenomenon and the news media industry bears a huge amount of responsibility for this happening here and elsewhere, they invented the model.

In reality, the way I see it, it is more a problem of cowardice on the part of many in the media than anything else for having surrendered to a false sense of "fairness" instead of pursuing and reporting facts and truth as best as it can be done. Perhaps that is where the "scheme" comes into play since very nefarious organizations have invested tremendous amounts of money and effort for that to happen, but the media players are responsible for having acquiesced.

Again, I can't disagree with your sentiment that people have chosen the current type of news "entertainment" media over other types of better and more informative news, and that those people are primarily responsible for keeping themselves in the dark.

"The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." -John F. Kennedy
