  •  More Christians studying Islam, & Muslims studying (23+ / 0-)

Christianity, might reduce tensions by increasing mutual knowledge,

except that those most responsible for the tensions have not brought good faith to studying their own religions.

The extent of Christian Studies of other religions to say they are all devil worshiping terrorists, which I always find surprising because if one is going to be a devil worshiper one pretty much has to believe in the christian world view of good and evil being two distinctly separate things.

Of course what really pisses pretty much all fundamentalist religious types off about other 'studying' the religion is the assumption that the religion needs to be studied, particularly as such study implies that other religions might be equally valid.  I see this when I say my myths are as valid as your myths, and all the fundamentalists go hysterical, like they are so insecure that calling their beliefs a myth might invalidate them.

And that is the difference, I think, between a fundamentalist and worshiper.  As a god fearing agnostic, science discussion, other weltanschauungs, simply reinforces my beliefs that the universe has grace, goodness, and, if I may be presumptuous, that as humans we are blessed with great responsibility to be partners in care of the creation.  If I have a discussion with a religious person who wants to kills gays, women, and black people that does not detract from my faith.  I do not feel the need to go to door and tell people they are dammed because they pray in public simply because I am so insecure in my own beliefs.  No, such things merely reinforce my amazement at the diversity of creation.

I would tell you the only word in the English language that has all the vowels in order but, that would be facetious.
