Every time I read about what Elon Musk's companies are up to, I am tempted to think of him as a real-life Tony Stark--although hopefully with less of an ego ;)

It's definitely exciting to see what private companies are doing for spaceflight, however I would really like to see us working on getting our government space programs back in action in the near future. There's cool stuff out there and I think we are doing ourselves a disservice by divesting from space science both financially and as a society.

I'd really like to see manned flights to Mars, personally.

    •  The better SpaceX is doing, the more likely (2+ / 0-)

we are to get public programs up and running because the cost of doing anything will be cheaper.  Still, I do feel pessimistic about the public sector under any kind of GOP influence, because they will not allow America to succeed at anything while a Democratic is president.  They just will not.  They're a treasonous barnacle, and they won't let money go to anything that increases our national standing.  It may have to be SpaceX for the time being.

Elon Musk is to all accounts every bit the egomaniac as Tony Stark, but no less charming and personable for it.  When you achieve what he has and what he may still, you're welcome to a giant ego.

I think I agree with you about the bitter partisanship that the Republicans have engaged in. If a Republican president got up there and said we should go to Mars, they would all cheer about the wonderful scientific genius of America and how those lousy hippy Democrats just want to help lazy poor people with that money. But of course if it were a Democrat they'd all dig in their heels and scream about what a horrible waste of public money it would be and how we can't go to Mars because that's not what Jesus wants and the gubmint is comin to take our gunz and turn us into a bunch of limp wrist latte-sippin' big city librul Nazi socialist communist Muzlumz and feed us all to Satan for breakfast.

However I also think that might work to the advantage of anyone looking to further space exploration on either side of the aisle, (I remember a certain someone who wanted a base on the moon, no?) so personally I think we are simply in a lull between eras of great space exploration and discovery. In the short term, I agree that it would likely be met with fierce opposition.
