I moved from a Jamaican neighborhood in London to NY when I was 19 years old.  And female.

Because I felt so comfortable and welcomed in a black community in London, I sought one out in Queens.

As perhaps the only white person in that neighborhood, do you think I had power when young men surrounded me every night walking home and called me names?

    It was terrifying.

Power at the overall level does not translate well to the individual level.

you can cross the street into a new neighborhood where you're no longer in the minority. In fact, most white people can spend their entire work weeks in neighborhoods where they're in the majority. Most black people can't.
