  •  It's reverse engineering of a sort... (6+ / 0-)

    For instance, consider these verses:

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
There's nothing inherently wrong with either of those concepts--the latter has been echoed throughout our research into early childhood development--but some folks will look at parents who struggle (for whatever reason) and just assume that they couldn't possibly fulfill the obligations suggested by these verses - therefore, the kid(s) just didn't have a chance to be 'brought up right', so they can't help but follow in their parents' footsteps.

Basically, it's the overly pious version of "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."  Yeah, it's warped and completely un-Christian, but that mentality is out there...

The word "parent" is supposed to be a VERB, people...

    •  That doesn't follow logically. (0+ / 0-)

"Start children off the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it" is NOT logically equivalent to "Start the children off the wrong way, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."  Not to mention that it undermines the entire message of salvation that is the NT.
