    at least in the minds of the instinct-driven.  That's how they see their familial relationships -- as people they own. Owning people makes them feel as if they are in control. When those people reject familial or familiar ties, they feel dissed. So, your father, feeling dismissed and disrespected, retaliates by "disowning" his son-in-law. Language tells us much of which the speakers are not aware.
    Consider that your and your husband's success is a rebuke to a father whose lack of ambition kept him in a rut. He doesn't know any better. He's intimidated by education and conflicted by the pride he feels in your achievement.
