Oregonian: Oregon company hauls oil equipment to Canada's controversial tar sands, muscling past protesters

Omega Morgan muscled past protestors for the second night in a row Wednesday and appeared ready to defy U.S. Forest Service officials later this week as it trucks a gigantic evaporator toward Canada's controversial tar sands oil-mining complex.

The Hillsboro company is leaving little to chance, hiring high-profile lobbyist Mark Rey to push its agenda.

"Some would call Mark Rey the Darth Vader of the environmental world," said Kevin Lewis, conservation director of Idaho Rivers United, whose nonprofit opposes movement of megaloads through the Nez Perce-Clearwater national forests.

Lewis, whose organization obtained a court decision in February empowering the Forest Service to stop shipments, expects officials to block the oversize load at the forest entrance on U.S. 12 as soon as Friday. "We are waiting to see what happens at milepost 74," he said.
