  •  Agree. Jail is sometimes necessary, but should (2+ / 0-)

be used sparingly. Five years sounds about right to me, plus the additional punishments outlined above.

[To be clear, I would advocate a 5-10 year max for almost any crime. I don't believe in taking away all hope, I suppose.]

It turns out that the skill set required to get elected is completely different than the skill set required to effectively govern.

    •  Thank God we don't live in a world (2+ / 0-)

where rapists and murderers walk free after 5-10 years.  One more thing to be thankful for.

      •  People in Norway live in that world (0+ / 0-)

Prisoners get "unsupervised parole" after serving 1/3 of their sentence, and the maximum sentence is 21 years.  Not only that but there are exactly 20 people that have gotten the full 21 year sentence.

And the result of that is that Norway is among the very best in the world in any quality of life ranking, and among the very lowest in the world in crime rate.  You may want to consider that before getting all righteous about the "right" way to handle criminals.

I'm against the death penalty, so that means we have to find alternate ways to remove some folks from society.

Certainly, many of our sentencing laws are way too harsh, but there are still a good number of crimes for which 10 years is not enough time separated from society.
