      •  From Chris Hedges: Rise Up or Die (10+ / 0-)

It is time to build radical mass movements that defy all formal centers of power and make concessions to none. It is time to employ the harsh language of open rebellion and class warfare. It is time to march to the beat of our own drum. The law historically has been a very imperfect tool for justice, as African-Americans know, but now it is exclusively the handmaiden of our corporate oppressors; now it is a mechanism of injustice. It was our corporate overlords who launched this war. Not us. Revolt will see us branded as criminals. Revolt will push us into the shadows. And yet, if we do not revolt we can no longer use the word “hope.”

Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” grasps the dark soul of global capitalism. We are all aboard the doomed ship Pequod, a name connected to an Indian tribe eradicated by genocide, and Ahab is in charge. “All my means are sane,” Ahab says, “my motive and my object mad.” We are sailing on a maniacal voyage of self-destruction, and no one in a position of authority, even if he or she sees what lies ahead, is willing or able to stop it. Those on the Pequod who had a conscience, including Starbuck, did not have the courage to defy Ahab. The ship and its crew were doomed by habit, cowardice and hubris. Melville’s warning must become ours. Rise up or die.

        We are here.
    •  There is a reason why coups d'état prioritize (10+ / 0-)

seizing not just the government buildings and military headquarters but the broadcast stations. And the banks.

      •  Not wanting coups d'état (6+ / 0-)

Just justice.   The coups d'état may already have happened with the Koch and other Wall street players.  who knows?

        •  The point is not that we should overthrow anything (11+ / 0-)

The point is that power is held through the communication of ideas and of money. Those are the things that confer both legitimacy and the ability to function. As long as the same people control the government, the banks and the media, everyone else is permanently on the outside. Therefore, interfering with that monopoly on power requires disrupting the government, the banks and/or the media.

This is basic strategy: knowing what needs to be done, then breaking it down into achievable parts.

Positive disruption of government has been demonstrated in Wisconsin and Texas. Occupy Wall Street almost achieved a positive disruption of the banks (which elicited a far more aggressive reaction than disrupting the government did). But so far, we've seen no positive disruption of the media.

on how to do this thing...  How to get people involved enough to help out the Moral Mondays and other activist who are actually trying to make change which does come slowly and not sure a lot of us have that much time...sigh.

            •  i've come to the conclusion (4+ / 0-)

that it is too late for us to create think tanks. And really what have think tanks done for us? They issue policy papers (or in the case of Koch brothers) create a place for pols to move in and out of (another revolving door!)

We have a think tank going already called experience. We see that people have outrage already. They are just looking for a place they can fit within.

Moral Mondays are catching on in other areas as well. But we need to augment them with other actions.

We need to look at our strengths and weaknesses and assess how best to use both.

We have some pretty media savvy folks and they need to augment those of us who are not by gently leading us (as they did through occupy) and allowing those of us who cannot get out as much to be witnesses.

We have some pretty savvy activists. We need to embrace them and back them up.

We have all kinds of power. We still have economic power and we need to use it or lose it immediately. We have people power and the same goes.

Twitter has replaced the news media in some respects. We need to know who and what to follow.

Hi NSA. I am doing constitutionally protected stuff - like free speech. Too bad you are not!
