  •  Perhaps this explains some of the obesity (10+ / 0-)

epidemic?  People aren't receiving the nutrition their bodies need from the same amount of food, so they continuously need to eat more to try and obtain that nutrition.

Someone recently gave me a photo of a group of maybe 20 young people taken on what is now my front porch about 60 years ago.  There's one girl who might be considered less than thin, but would not be considered fat by any means today.  The rest of them are stick thin.  If that number of people in that age range were photographed today, a good portion would be obese and at least half would be larger than the one woman who was a bit heavy.  People didn't suddenly just start over eating for no reason.  I suspect the lack of nutritional value in our food might be a part of the reason.

    •  100% agree. Americans eat a lot of food that has (1+ / 0-)

been over-processed and de-natured so that there is nothing left  - all for the sake of "convenience". Here in Germany (expat here) you don't have rows upon rows upon rows of junk food (though you do see more potato chips nowadays) and "ready-to-eat" stuff that you find in US grocery stores, and the Germans - contrary to some stereotypes - are generally not fat, though obesity in youth has increased, too, along with fattening after-school snacks. That causes some concern here, too, but it's nothing like the problem in the States, to say nothing of the health problems caused by poor nutrition. That's a whole 'nuther can of worms.

I would not be surprised if someday it is learned that GMO food is implicated in the growing number of people diagnosed with gluten intolerance. Not that many years ago almost no one had heard about the condition, which causes serious damage to the intestinal tract and arises from eating food with wheat, barley and some other grains. At present the only remedy is to be super careful not to eat any food containing gluten, not even a crumb. Check out the grocery stores for all the products that are now being labeled gluten free and the restaurants offering gluten-free items. They are responding to a real need.
