when they fail to control their wayward guns?

When a child shoots another child, it's the gun owner's failure. Period.

It is absurd to transfer the responsibility of the known hazard (a  deadly weapon brought into the home) from the adult to a 5 year old.

If you leave buckets of gasoline and matches lying around and your kid burns the house down, who's responsible?

    You are! No one else!

    •  They didn't teach their kids avoidance. (0+ / 0-)

Are you so hell bent on throwing shit at me that you can't see that several comments upthread I say that the parents have the obligation to gun-proof their children?

Are you so blinded by a knee-jerk emotional reaction that you completely missed that?

By the way, how the hell do you control where the parents of your child's friends and acquaintances keep their gasoline and matches?

In consideration of the fact that you have no fucking clue as to where those adults keep the gas for the lawn mower, shouldn't you teach your kid to NOT PLAY WITH GAS!

Sheesh, is it that hard to understand that you have to teach the child how to act responsibly when away from home?

Or are you just so consumed by the need to control others that you think your child will never need to know how to live on their own because you will never allow your child to have their own life?

parents failed to secure their firearms that they should now gun-proof their children.

You keep side-stepping the issue. Parents who are so careless that they can't secure their guns, are not going to be able to teach or sustain safe gun handling skills in their kids.

        Kid model behavior.

I addressed the child-proof thesis earlier:

The correlation is for people who grew up with guns to be more careless about securing guns, than people who became bun owners when they are adults.

We see it every day. Careless adults forgetting their gun in their luggage, forgetting their gun was in their pocket, leaving the gun in the purse on the shopping cart.

The No. 1 problem to solve is to lock up the guns, and to remove guns from the homes of people who are too careless to accomplish that.

        •  I sidestep nothing. (0+ / 0-)

If you are going to keep your kids locked up in your house forever, then locking up your guns is all you need to do.

But if you are going to allow your kids to do things like go to school and meet other children and have a life, then you need to teach your children not to touch things that they may encounter while out there in the whole wide world.

You DO plan on letting your children out of the basement, right?

If you are unable to understand that your control over your own home is not going to fulfill your parental duties, then please give your children to someone who will be more responsible.
