  •  I have a number of these types of books (11+ / 0-)

    among my collection of cookbooks.  Not this particular one, however, which strikes me as likely a cut above the average.  

    I remember, a few years ago, when there was a BBC reality show structured around a modern family agreeing to live in the manner of the time of the turn of the (19th/20th) century.  I enjoyed that a bit.  But there is a clear difference between watching a family struggling with the unfamiliarity of past times, and a book of "receipts", household hints and philosophical asides intended for a long-dead contemporary audience.

    Time to open up a box in the basement, and to pull out one of my own examples of this genre.
