  •  Humanity's Probably Not at Risk; Civilization Is. (17+ / 0-)

Which is the worst news in all this, it's why ownership is willing to press on wrecking the place.

At the height of the cold war they felt they and their assets were at as much risk as we and ours, which is why they allowed the middle class to rise to an unprecedented peak at considerable cost to ownership.

    •  I respectfully disagree - eventually there will (12+ / 0-)

be nothing left to eat, drink or breath.

NASA knows this - they have learned through careful scientific observation that conditions on Mars and Venus were once very different than they are today.

If our planet were an apple, the atmosphere would be thinner than the peel. It won't take much more of what we are doing to it.

The predator class is not smarter than the rest of us - just more grabby.

The three hundred thousand survivors will have plenty to hunt and gather as they huddle in their high arctic refuge.

Joking aside, back in 1991 I gave a lecture to my chemical dynamics students on the topic of the Earth as a Complex Dynamical System.  The core idea was that the Earth had two possible end states, iceball and inferno, and that the climate followed a complicated trajectory between the two extremes.

At the time it seemed a safe bet that feedback mechanisms would keep the climate from wandering too far from the comfy middle.  Since that time it has come out that iceball actually happened.

I hold out hope that we are not immediately headed for a venusian atmosphere, but the next stable fixed point on the global temperature scale is probably warmer than we would choose if left to our own devices.  Certainly the process of getting there would wreak intolerable suffering and devastation.

As to the predator class, a lot of the rich are too silly to be believed - but enough are really smart to make the class dangerous.
