The public option was shot in a backroom deal with insurance companies.

This was after the Republicans were apparently on their last legs after 2008. Thoroughly discredited and all that.

This was after Obama won the presidency with "universal healthcare" as one of his biggest issues.

It was literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sell the concept of universal healthcare to the American people, and the Democrats caved. They caved, gave Dems like Baucus what he wanted, and after the law passed, the Dems ran away from the issue in order to "pivot" to the deficit. Now, after four years of steady vilification of the law by the right-wing, Obama is starting to call out the GOP, while simultaneously giving the businesses and insurance companies even more breaks when he should be telling them to stick it.

    There's no excuses here.

Banking on the American people to be able to sort all this out and declare the adult in the room the winner is a very big bet. -Digby
