    the supposed historical data is based on various sorts of guesswork, with an artificial beginning at 1850. If we're looking to blame peoples for adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, there is no reason not to throw in, say, a several more centuries of  Britain burning coal and, what the heck, millennia of Europeans burning their forests for fuel and heat. How would that contrast with 160 years of U.S. emissions?

      that CO2 didn't exceed 280 ppm until the latter part of the 19th Century and it was only in the mid 20th that we started to see levels in the mid 300s.
