    In fact I'd say it is something somewhat similar to survivor's guilt.

    I'm approaching retirement and am one of the lucky few with a defined-benefit pension, and a relatively modest 401k-like plan on top of that. I am often struck with the sense of being "atypical" in this respect. I am not likely to have to worry about my pension disappearing in the future and it's far more robust than Social Security. It seems only fair to me that people who pay as much into Social Security as I do into the Civil Service Retirement System should expect to receive an amount in Social Security benefits similar to what I'll receive from my pension.
