  •  Most children of smokers... (5+ / 0-)

Myself included, would not have wished to be removed from our parents' home because they smoked. Just a guess.

I am sorry that you have had health issues. Still think it's an awful reason to remove children from a home.

if your parents had smoked outside?

That's what I was getting at. Sorry that I didn't make that clear! And if a child is medically fragile (I was), shouldn't everything be done to keep the child safe? Do you keep an infant on a nebulizer in a home with a chain smoker, if the smoker flat refuses to smoke outside? Who is more important? The smoker or the child?

These are not hypotheticals. They are every day questions.

If I did, I would smoke outside, most of the time anyway, and if possible, have a dedicated room for smoking, even a garage, so that I could watch my games or TV and have a puff at the same time.

I just feel like I'm really blessed to have the mother I have. It breaks my heart to think that people would consider her a bad mother or think she shouldn't have custody of my brother and I as kids because she smoked in our apartment. It's obviously not good for kids, but I don't think people should be demonized or subject to law enforcement for doing it. Education is working. Not for every kid, but it's working.

When I was a kid, it was perfectly normal to let your kids drive around in the back of the pickup truck and drive home without a safety belt with your newborn in your lap in the front seat .  It doesn't mean those people were bad parents, but now we (should) know better.
