    •  I was last carded in a bar (9+ / 0-)

at the age of 38. In all fairness, it was pretty dimly lighted and I was with a bunch of other women, most of whom were much younger than me. But I looked a lot younger than my age for most of my adult life.

It worked very well for me in my professional life. I was a textile designer and stylist, a field in which age discrimination was rampant long before it became common practice elsewhere. It was understood that if you hadn't gotten to where you wanted to be for the rest of you career by the time you were 40-45, you weren't going to. If you were lucky you got to keep the job you had at that point, but with the industry heading offshore at a rapid rate, not many people were that lucky. My last job in the field ended when I was 49. I still looked at lot younger than my age even then (I don't anymore), which probably helped me gain a foothold in my new, low-paying-but-much-lower-stress career.

Ironically, it's one of the few remaining occupations where having 25+ years' experience (which I don't) is considered an asset rather than a liability.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."........ "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." (yeah, same guy.)

      •  Trust me... (5+ / 0-)

It beats looking older than your age.  I started going gray in high school and my hair was snow white by 40.  People are constantly saying things to me like ""aren't you ready to retire?" when I have two decades left to work before the chance of SS.

Looking younger than your age is not a bad thing.

All in all, with all the money spent on cosmetics and advertising, I can assure you looking younger is the better deal.

And God said, "Let there be light"; and with a Big Bang, there was light. And God said "Ow! Ow My eyes!" and in a flash God separated light from darkness. "Whew! Now that's better. Now where was I. Oh yea . . ."
