were so heavily overparented and overscheduled that they have little to no experience dealing with situations in which they aren't being told exactly what to do every step of the way. Previous generations would have gone through the necessary trial-and-error steps of learning how to act in such situations back when they were children or teens (and the consequences of failure were lower); this generation is having to do it in adulthood.

All that said, it's quite easy to overgeneralize from isolated incidents that particularly stand out.

their children up that way, making sure that not a single minute of their day presents them with unexpected stress or challenges, and if anything bothers them, instead of learning to deal with it, it's removed from the equation. Their upbringing seems completely programmed, scheduled and smoothed over, and it makes me wonder how they'll handle life as adults. They'll lack some critical coping skills. I don't understand why parents do this. My guess is that they had tough upbringings, and bring their kids up the way they wish they'd been brought up. Such projected overcompensating is not healthy.

love, but also lots of challenges and some free reign to make mistakes. Growth comes from that, not dependency.
