    Obama and Clapper are on the side of the people.  Unless you can see into their heads and know their thoughts, their actions are the only things we can judge them on... and they're not on the side of the people.

      but recognizing that, because I am unable to ascertain the constraints they face, I am even less able to ascertain their goals or the quality of their efforts to achieve those goals.  

      I like to think I am on the side of the people, but if I were in their place, I cannot predict what I would determine are achievable goals and/or necessary compromises.

      This is an ugly picture, but it is ugly in large part for reasons that preceded and appear much bigger than Clapper or Obama.

      Most relevant to my comparison:

      The NSA/DNI picture is not as simple as the one relevant to the Summers decision, on which any reader of a variety of news and commentary can take a well-informed  position on Summers and the merits of appointing him.
