    needed a map just to wander thru this post.  I did not realize that the houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey are effectively the same building. X^|  Pretty crowded piece of real estate.  It seems to me that somewhere in that block is also a short street with a single dwelling, Downing Street.

      ...(walking AWAY from the Thames), make a right into Whitehall...it is about 600 yards up on the opposite side of the road.

      When I was a schoolboy, you could walk DOWN the short length of Downing Street, and stare at the famous door of No 10 from the other side of the street...no more, of course, as there are permanent security gates!
