    1.  Putin isn't very popular in his second time through as President......How much of this is posturing to gain popularity a la Bill Clinton's 'Sister Soulja' moment?

    2.  Does this have anything to do with Russia's demographics problem vis-a-vis 'Great Russians' & it's ethnic minorities (ie:  "We need more Russian babies!")

    •  It has a great deal to do with both (7+ / 0-)

It's been suggested here and elsewhere that the current anti-gay campaign is a distraction from Putin's lack of popularity and from Russia's on-going economic difficulties. Nothing distracts like a scapegoat.

And yes Russia is indeed obsessed with its declining birthrate. Rather than deal with the actual reasons for that phenomenon, it's simpler to blame homosexual activity. Given that gay people can and do become parents, and, in areas where homosexuality is not tolerated frequently marry and become parents as an act of self-preservation, this of course especially ludicrous. Add to that the fact that gay men and lesbians constitute a relatively small portion of the population; the former figure of 10% has been decreased to somewhere between 3% and 5%. But if you're looking to blame some discernible group of people for problems they have nothing at all to do with, there's no reason to let facts get in the way, is there?
