  •  This is the 1st Amendment (3+ / 0-)

    that gave us Citizens United?

It's a double-edged sword, and one edge is doing great harm.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

Most of the people taking a hard line against us are firmly convinced that they are the last defenders of civilization... The last stronghold of mother, God, home and apple pie and they're full of shit! David Crosby, Journey Thru the Past.

      •  The Supreme Court (2+ / 0-)

        IS the Constitution.

Do you not understand that? Every decision they make, regardless of the way they divide becomes the supreme law of the land. There is no appeal, it cannot be overturned.

Giving them the ability to rule that "republicans are evil" is illegal hate speech is not a remedy for that.

          •  Nonetheless, they did rule that (2+ / 0-)

and it is now Constitutionally protected speech.

            See how that works?

          •  actually i'd argue how you spend your money (0+ / 0-)

is speech. It speaks volumes as to a person or government's priorities. The bigger problem is are non-human entities like corporations, unions, non-profits deserving of all the rights of a flesh and blood human being?

I'd like to see wolf pac let non-human entities have all the rights of human being except to engage in direct political discourse. On the other hand, I really don't like straight democracy. How much sense is it that the house and senate are BOTH elected by majority. I'd like to see some counterweight to just sheer populism of the house in the senate. maybe by getting rid of the 17th amendment?
