Of this small house built on an odd lot down the block from me.  It's really quite nice and not the normal humongo houses they've been builidng around here of late where the house takes up the lot of land with no yard space! Remember, i don't live in Tx where there is a whole lot of room! Lol

It's single story... Also an oddity for new houses these days (although it was the norm in earlier decades last century)

It's finally done and I see people have moved in. :-)

Austin has a "McMansion" ordinance which prevents large houses from being built on small urban lots. There are parts of the ordinance I agree with but the majority of it is much too restrictive, poorly thought-out, and prohibits creativity. Plus it's putting unnecessary pressure on the tax base and families are discovering they can't get a house the size they want or need in the inner city so they're moving to the suburbs. So our urban sprawl continues unabated.

The city is woefully lacking at interpreting and enforcing their own rules and the people making the determinations know very little or absolutely nothing about architecture. They've taken a creative endeavor, beauracratised it, and forced residential design and construction into very narrow constraints. It's appaling and unfortunate. It will be yet another thing that future generations will hate us for.

The beauty of the urban fabric is how it changes and morphs over time. There is absolutely nothing organic in McMansion ordinances.

The large houses they build here are ugly as all hell.  It's why this small house is so refreshing. It looks like there really was a real architect involved. :-)

It makes no sense to me for people to move to the suburbs of NYC to not have the typical greenery around the house to enjoy a grill, patio... All the things that nomally are associated with suburbia and to oractically live on top of your neighbor because there is maybe 5 feet between the house outerwalls! It's insane.

Most lots in my nieghborhhod are 60-80x60-120. There is not a lot of space to build a humongo house! Most all are three stories with full attics as well.

        Bleh.

I just hate the home designs.  Just huge boxes built, no grace, no sweet feature that catches the eye.

Instead of little boxes of Levittown, you have huge monster houses popping up that all look the same.
