      the protest-laden 2008 Beijing Olympics.

And I don't think the USOC minds that one bit. I think the USOC would be quite happy to see the Russian government made to look like the backwards thugocracy it is, on international television.

is essentially telling u.s. athletes to get in the closet and shut up. that won't end well.

Did you see the president of the USOC's response to Nick Symmond's dedication of his medal to gay Russians?

“I know he feels strongly about this issue as many Americans do, beyond that we really don’t have any comments,” Blackmun said. “We encourage our athletes to work within Russian law, and I know Nick is trying to do that as well.”
He's really trying by, uh, making a big speech against them.

Sometimes it pays to read between the lines. The USOC is going to do nothing to stop its athletes from protesting.

You can’t judge in advance what you’re going to do. Each Games is different. The athletes are always going into countries with laws different than his or her own country. They’re going to agree with those laws in some ways, they’re going to disagree with those laws in other ways. It’s our strong desire that our athletes comply with the laws of every nation that we visit. This law is no different.
            we'll see.

    •  NBC will most likely just try to completely... (0+ / 0-)

...ignore it all, not too unlike how they ignored 2008 gold medalling diver Matthew Mitcham being gay and all the trouble he had to go through to be allowed to bring his bf/parter/whatever compared to the ease with which straight olympians brought their respective significant-others.
