  •  SO, if this report is telling us (7+ / 0-)

we will warm at least 9f in the next 100 years, but the international community is not factoring in warming accelerants like methane, are we in effect looking at extinction in the next 75-100 years according to this science?

This is terribly sad. What a waste we have made of our world. My kids...

      •  I have no science background (6+ / 0-)

but I grew up in rural New England, and I was telling college friends in the early 1990's about the environmental changes I personally could observe between the 1970's and 1990's. I think people at the time suggested I should quit smoking so much reefer. I knew better, and here we are.

But this is different. This scenario is saying we have 100 years. Is this accurate? What is your opinion? Because 100 years is game over.

What could we do and what impact could we possibly have beyond a truly immediate, global shutdown of all systems if this report is even close to accurate?

    •  They are not idiots. They are probably factoring (4+ / 0-)

in all the obvious stuff including methane. The problem is that no one knows how emissions will change over time.

    •  We have 2 or 3 more good years (4+ / 0-)

At the current rate of melting, the Arctic Ocean will be ice-free at the end of the melt season by 2017 at the latest.

Once that happens, the climate will be in for much bigger changes and extreme events than we have seen to date.
The Arctic ocean could quickly transition to being ice-free year round, with only a few areas freezing over in the winter.  Without the stabilizing influence of the ice cap, the Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation of three cells could break down to only one cell, disrupting weather patterns of the mid-latitudes that depend on the existence of the Ferrell cell.

It will be, in the words of the old Chinese curse, "an interesting time to live in".
