  •  Must be Halloween with all that grave-turning (21+ / 0-)

It's happened twice before in recent years - and many, many more further back in time.

FDR couldn't get private electrical to provide power to hundreds of thousands of mostly rural homes.  He tried for years, threw in the bargaining towel, and did it himself.

Eisenhower ran into the same problem with lame capitalism and their telephone needs.  Again, he saw to it that every American had a phone.

While there were conservative objections on both those counts - after all, they're an indictment on the failure of capitalism - I sure don't remember anyone saying the Founders would even care a lick.

Republican hyperbole won't fix broken capitalism, and somebody's got to do it.  Not only that, but GOP fears will likely be realized, and Obamanet will likely declare a profit.

When they call roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer 'Present' or 'Not guilty'. --Teddy Roosevelt

    •  Capitalism, especially unbridled, deregulated (4+ / 0-)

vulture American capitalism, is destined to destroy itself.  I firmly believe in European style social democracies (France is an excellent case study) where the people have solidarity and power and counteract the forces of exploitation and usory practices and other abuses of big business and coporatists in government.  The French now have a Socialist president and they remain powerful in their unity as a people - fighting the 5% and their attempts to harm the working and middle classes and the poor and underprivileged.  Bravo!  Vive la France!  Solidarity.

I am an American, the son of a Steelworker (long deceased) who taught me to believe in unions and a living wage, a former AFSCME member during my own career in state government, and the son of a strong feminist (also deceased long ago) who was an FDR/JFK/LBJ Liberal/Progressive - who taught me a Catholic social gospel worldview combined with secular humanism.  I am proud to say I worked in social services in my post military (USAF) career.  Now retired, I never gave up a belief in the dignity and solidarity of workers, the middle class and the poor.  Sadly, in the US, the right wing conservatives have been ascendant and want to change the direction of this country from a social democracy to a vulture capitalist haven - which is destroying the people - the workers, the middle class and the poor.

      Peace & Love
