  •  I don't live up to my own (7+ / 0-)

ideals. Very few of us do. Chances are the diarist is sincerely in his concerns and really it does not take massive amounts of effort to avoid being a self absorbed publicity seeker and profiteer from the exercise of attempting to be a male feminist the way Schwyzer was. I read some of his stuff it was always about him.

The diarist is asking a tough question, it is also an interesting one. I think it is very difficult for a man to declare himself a feminist, there are social consequences. However, male feminists, like white people who want to be vocal ant-racist spokespersons, should not expect to get the special flower treatment or to be excused from critique when they stumble. I am not suggesting this is the case with the diarist at all, but it does seem to happen more in the public realm.

    •  Maybe no special flower, but each stumble is (3+ / 0-)

an opportunity to further the discussion, to go deeper. And that dive doesn't have to be done in hostility.

Teachable moments don't have to be premised on fights or anger.

Gentlemen, congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training (Zed, MIB).
