  •  Exactly! Even if it did happen, it could have been (9+ / 0-)

    2 people talking!

God, with that "burden" of proof, one could eliminate a polling place for any made up reason!

Ayn sucks. Please know I am not rude. I cannot rec anything from this browser. When I rec or post diaries I am a guest at some exotic locale's computer.

    •  Whiuch they have done in Watauga County, (23+ / 0-)

as irmaly's incredible diary over the weekend described.

Please, if anybody hasn't seen the videos of the Board of Elections "meeting" in irmaly's diary, take the time to do so. One is 15 minutes, one is a full hour.

The videos begin with the newly-appointed Republican members refusing to move the meeting into public view until after they had appointed themselves chairman and secretary (those self-appointments are, amazingly enough, actually legal the way NC county boards of elections are set up), and then moves on to the business of closing voting precincts in Democrat-heavy areas of the county.

They closed the precinct on the Appalachian State University campus; reasons: "1. non-students might have difficulty finding the student union on campus, and 2. we all know how much more concerned schools and universities have become with security and the presence of outsiders."

They closed another centrally-located precinct at the National Guard armory; reasons: "1. in the event of a state of emergency, the National Guard might need to be mobilized and the election would disrupt said mobilization, and 2. the armory is in a floodplain and flooding might hamper voter access".

They've gone completely over the top in this state; the voter suppression has reached a level beyond anything almost anybody living today has experienced. And these local decisions are on top of the most restrictive statewide voter ID law in the nation just passed by the Teapublicans, along with elimination of many registration opportunities, severe cuts to early voting, and a provisional ballot process that no longer allows a vote cast in the right county by a fully-registered voter - but at the wrong precinct - to be counted.

and also recommend it to anyone who doesn't believe this is a growing threat to ALL voters...regardless of affiliation.

        •  And, the back story of voter supression in Watauga (7+ / 0-)

County reveals the all too familiar pattern of Republicans in charge. They are not doing this BS for ideological fundy reasons. It's local fascism driven primarily by one rich developer.

They really don't care about any "so-called" leveling the playing field. They want to win and

          their motive is money.

A handful of wealthy developers and their law-firm lackeys in Boone are behind all this.  Particularly one, his son is running for town council and his daughter is chair of the county Repug party.

Cheat, win and dismantle zoning laws for bigger bucks is their plan douping their fellow Republicans into supporting them along the way.

Makes one feel sorry for Republicans in our county who think they are supporting conservative principles.

I strongly suspect that it is well nigh impossible at this point for anyone in this country to honestly believe that a vote for a Republican is a vote for "conservative" principles.  Those days are long gone.  I have nothing but contempt for Republican voters these days.

It's not a question of whether our founding fathers are rolling in their graves but rather of how many RPM they're clocking.

legislature's attempt last session to eliminate the City of Boone's extraterritorial jurisdiction (S949)? Sponsored by snake worm tapeworm Dan Soucek, it was an attempt to relieve developers who wished to destroy the scenic mountainside land in Watauga County of the responsibility to operate under Boone's stricter zoning and environmental regulations.

I notice that the bill never passed the House last session and doesn't seem to have been revived this session. It passed the Senate 32-17 on strictly party-line vote - with the exception of Charlotte's own tapeworm Democrat Dan Clodfelter, who is an attorney whose practice specializes in helping developers circumvent (or eliminate) any regulation of their "profession". Clodfelter is living, breathing proof that some Democrats are 100% as bad as Republicans (well, I guess we should have learned that from Lieberman, Lincoln, Baucus, etc).

Anyway, since I'm from Charlotte and you seem to know Watauga County politics, I'm just curious. If these putrid sewage stains could capture a majority of the Boone City Council, they could simply eliminate all local regulation at the city council level, right? Kill two birds with one stone: disenfranchise the area's college students (some of whom are - horrors - black!) and other Democrats while making life comfortable for the Evangelical Teabag Taliban, and pay themselves handsome bonuses in the process, by raping the countryside for quick and dirty profit.

Disgusting. Well, of course...disgusting is a synonym for Republican.

mbrock49's diary, Voting Rights Scandal in NC, and (sorry if it's not good protocol or something) will repeat it here:

When I read the All-Hell-Broke-Loose-at-the-Board-of-Elections-Meeting Diary you linked to, I went, mentally kicking and screaming ( A meeting? a meeting of some local board where I don't even live? Nooo....), to the full video of the Wautaga Board of Elections Meeting.

Riveting. Here's what we're up against people. Planned and synchronized. If you're in NC, watch the video and get thee to your next Election Board meeting. If you live elsewhere, watch the video - and know that this is coming, courtesy of ALEC, to a meeting near you. By the time people notice national candidates and elections, it's all over.

We all need to pay attention to our local politics. Attend the damn boring meetings. I say we make them into social events. meet-ups with friends. Dates. Sing-a-longs. Bring popcorn. Bring lawyers. Pass around Mad Libs. Whatever. Just show up.
