  •  The biotech company I worked for actually did (0+ / 0-)

    move from La Jolla (CA) to Texas (Austin). The RW owners saw the low income & sales tax and decided we'd all love it. (The company was Stratagene; no longer exists, in part because of the move). About half the LJ staff refused to go. Of those who did, they saw the low housing prices and thought great; but Texas has very high property tax.
    For the business, it was a disaster. Our backorder (which is deadly in biotech, because you can usually find another vendor), went from ca. $100k to as high (and this lasted years) as $2M. They couldn't get enough trained staff (Ambion was a better employer) and the local employees weren't trained, and, while wages were lower, they had a hard time finding people who could read properly, say, for shipping dept.
    In the end, they sold the company to Agilent. Ha!
