    Clinton, were she to run and win, would be the first former Sec. of State since I don't know when to become President-I just got to thinking about that since some others were mentioning mayors and port administrators or whatever to ascend to the VP and/or Presidency.  
    From what I remember about presidential history, there were more than a few Secretaries of State who went on to become President during the 1800s, starting with Jefferson, Madison, I think Monroe, later on I think Buchanan was a SoS and a couple of others.  SoS is still one of the most prestigious positions in any cabinet, but it doesn't seem to be the most common stepping stone that the VP became in the 20th century.  While in the 19th century, the VP was almost totally irrelevant once an administration began.
