Opposition to gun control is a critical issue for a substantial (maybe as much as 20%) of Democrats in swing districts. The NRA aside, this is going to hurt Democrats in swing districts in state legislatures as well as Congressional seats around the country, including Democrats who voted against gun control measures as well as in legislative bodies that never took up gun control. Morse is going to be voted against in this election by good Democrats who voted for him before.
Republicans across the country are looking at Democratic statements on gun control as an answer to their prayers. They've been pounded repeatedly by the fact that most of their candidates are extremists and nuts. Now, they have an issue that lets them call their Democratic opponents "extremists" in a way that actually resonates with a critical mass of voters.
I'm not happy to say this, but I don't think this will go well for us. We should be able to pound the wingnuts for their "out-of-touch" positions, but a lot of people look at the mainstream Democratic position on gun control as being as "extremist" and radical as we regard the anti-abortion zealots.
