  •  Yep. North Carolina was the last state... (13+ / 0-) join the Confederacy, indicating some reluctance even then to be so out of step. And until the Supreme Court mucked things up, only 40 of N.C.'s 100 counties were covered by pre-clearance under the Voting Rights Act (compared with every count in seven other Southern states, plus Arizona and Alaska).

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.

at least I could if I thought about it for a while.  There are places in this state that even I'm barely white enough to go.

NC actually elected 2 black legislators during Reconstruction.  They only lasted one term, though, so I guess the folks in their districts figured they'd done their bit and could take the rest of the century off.  And the same state that gave us James Meredith also gave us Jesse Helms.  But until the Red Tide of 2010 NC was, on balance, one of the more progressive of the Southern states.  How we came to be the subject of ridicule in Alabama is a sad commentary on how far and how fast we fell.

I'll believe corporations are people when one comes home from Afghanistan in a body bag.
