  •  I read the article last night, and I was deeply (19+ / 0-)

saddened...I don't understand how anyone could sink that low...it seems that a certain segment of our population no longer understands what it means to be human.

I have a granddaughter who is verbally autistic. She is an incredible child and I love her more than life itself...I can't imagine what it would feel like to have someone suggest that she be euthanized...just writing about it makes me sick.

Homer177, I admire your courage and success. You have accomplished far more than many people have ever dreamed of.

And I'm sorry to hear that you have suffered indignities because of your problems. You deserve support and understanding from those without disabilities, not bullying. We all have our own problems...and no one has the right to judge another human being.

    I wish you the best...

    •  I still have a very long way to go, I suspect. (11+ / 0-)

It took me a long time to get to this point. A long time. I didn't start college until just after turning 22 and since then I haven't looked back.

The biggest thing I struggle with though, even as I approach 30 years of age, is social situations. I don't do small talk well, and if someone talks politics I often have to leave the room because I always feel the need to correct people who often refuse to listen. I guess it's a hot button topic for anyone, but doubly so for me given my own experience.

I'm just one of those people who believes there's no excuse for the current shape the country, and my state are in. It sure is frustrating when words fall on deaf ears.

I write a series called 'My Life as an Aspie', documenting my experiences before and after my A.S. diagnosis as a way to help fellow Aspies and parents of Aspies and spread awareness. If I help just one person by doing this, then I've served a purpose.

        And this:

I couldn't agree more...and to put it bluntly, most people act like assholes, so I don't blame you for wanting to leave the room when people don't get it...

You're okay, Homer177...and the fact that you waited before beginning your college career, and still succeeded, makes your efforts more impressive. Most people never make it to first base, so be proud of what you've accomplished.
