  •  Well he had a final destination in mind before he (0+ / 0-)

left Hong Kong, so he must have had SOME indication that he would be able to get asylum.  I just found it curious that he advertised a layover in Moscow, not knowing if he'd ever have a chance to leave there.  By the time he was supposedly in the air, everybody who'd turned on a TV in the preceding 48 hours knew his travel itinerary.  That doesn't seem like very sound tradecraft to me.

    •  He's a computer spy, not a HUMINT spy. (1+ / 0-)

In other words, despite whatever expertise he has at knowing how the surveillance system works or the department security works, etc, as far as we know he has never worked as a trained human spy, moving stealthily around the world, undercover IDs, fake passports, etc.

And I'm not sure how the Moscow news got out, honestly. I'd have to go back and look it up. As I remember, he vanished from Hong Kong, then was "known" to be in Russia, but I don't remember who leaked or announced the news.

At any rate, to have done what he has done and escaped the reaches of our security forces is pretty amazing for a 20-something guy, in my opinion.

      •  True... he's not a trained operative (0+ / 0-)

but you'd have to think he'd read a Tom Clancy novel at some point.  Or at least seen the movie.  He didn't really need a fake identity if he had arrangements for asylum, but you'd think he'd have managed to keep a lid on his travel plans at least.

It is pretty amazing that he's still above ground and not locked up somewhere. Especially given that he doesn't appear to be very adept at the whole spy thing.  That may be what's pissing off the powers that be more than anything.
