    on the metadata.  They need a large data set to do it.  They collect the large dataset, then it's the pattern matching that significantly shrinks the working set down.
    Maybe people think that's too intrusive; if so, then Congress I imagine will pass a law forcing NSA to return to older, pre-pattern matching techniques.  Maybe it'll be less effective at finding terrorist communications, but if that's what the people want, so be it.

      the problem is that all of this has been so poorly handled that almost all the credibility of the characters involved on the part of the agency has been squandered. And, that debate should have been upfront not after dozens, if not hundreds, of denials and execrable behavior on the part of the characters that run the agency, past and present. For one, speaking for myself, I no longer believe a word they say, Alexander, Clapper, Hayden, et al., and they are not trustworthy.
