When I was growing up as a Methodist, we had bishops and we were taught about Apostolic Succession, but I am not sure that the Church of England, the mother of the Methodist Church, recognizes their bishops as being in the Succession.  For that matter, does the Catholic Church recognize Anglican and Episcopal bishops (aside from the openly gay ones) as Apostolic?  Does the Orthodox Church recognize Catholic bishops? For what it's worth, the (merged in the 1960's) United Methodist Church calls their bishops District Superintendents nowadays.

The LDS claims that the original group surrounding Smith were apostles (in fact, their leadership are CALLED Apostles), which makes their bishops Apostolic in their own eyes.

And among totally independent congregations which recruit their clergy by charismatic reputation, the ministers of particularly large and active congregations adopt the title Bishop. not particularly caring about the A.S. which many Protestant denominations do not recognize anyway.

This seems to be prevalent among predominantly black congregations, but one predominantly black denomination, the AME (African Methodist Episcopal) still follows the A.S. model.

And actually, "bishop" is from the Greek word for "supervisor."
