  •  Great story! (7+ / 0-)

I used to do nesting surveys and one of the best perks I had was have the privilege of holding Killdeer babies in my hands (when they'd wandered off somewhere potentially dangerous).  Mama was always going crazy, but once it realized that I wasn't going to eat it, the baby Killdeer would sit down in my hand's shade and "power-save" until I returned it to the family.

It also got me in, as a teenager, to many places that otherwise would never have let me in, like exclusive country clubs.  I'd also been pulled over by cops, until I showed them my paperwork and explained WHY I was using binoculars in their neighborhoods!

I never thought to combine it with political activism, though - that was a real stroke of genius.

I'll bet mama killdeer went crazy when you picked up a chick.  They go crazy if I look sideways at their chicks, and then follow me for a quarter-mile.

In fact, after a little while, she piped down too.  Maybe she'd written off the chick for lost, or just wasn't distressed because it wasn't peeping any more.  But it was soon returned to its family safe and sound.

Believe me, I didn't do such things lightly.  I figured a little distress was worth not having a chick squashed in a roadway or a parking lot.  I like Killdeer far too much to let their babies suffer that kind of a fate.

I've see mommy killdeer get hysterical over a disturbed nest, I am surprised they'd ever write off a lost chick.

Oh, I'm not critizing you.  Bless you for helping killdeer. Thank you for helping me learn more about killdeer, that once the chick stops peeping, mom calms down.

After all, the story isn't about Killdeer.  The story's about how you used Killdeer surveying to talk to some people politically that you never would have been able to otherwise, and turned some heads (and sowed a few seeds of doubt) doing it.

But helping Killdeer?  I'm delighted to do it.  If I may be a bit anthropocentric, Killdeer are "golden birds" - they aren't destructive, they are great environmental barometers, they eat all manner of nasty insects and pests, they're very handsome plovers, and they're generally sweet-natured and absolutely full of character.

If you want, some time, I'll send a PM to you about a couple of my Killdeer stories.  I've had some very interesting encounters with the wee beasties.

It's not a theadjack when its towards the end of the comments.  I've diaried about killdeer several times and am dying to learn more.
