  •  Do elk need culling the way that deer do? (0+ / 0-)

They're part of the same ungulate family and whenever I've seen them, there were so many, so I'm guessing yes. Isn't it ultimately humane?

And typically, what kind of elk does an environmentally conscientious hunter kill? Is it ever acceptable to kill a female elk?

I'm not sure if I've ever had elk. I'm sure it's good. I've had venison, which was delicious. Does it make good jerky?

I've got to admit that while they're magnificent creatures, I don't care much for that high-pitched call of theirs. So disproportionate to how they appear.

      potentially need culling.

Elk, mule deer, moose, and pronghorn in the west in any place human hunting is allowed are kept at desired populations by human harvest. Harvest has a distinct meaning when used by wildlife managers. It implies a careful regulated hunt to specific numbers.

An environmentally conscientious hunter harvests any animal that is legal and he will if possible use. With ungulates harvest of females is the single most valuable management tool available to biologists. Managers will increase available cow (female) elk tags or eliminate cow elk hunting altogether depending on the target population number.

Almost every animal in the wild dies a terror filled extremely painful death. At best they die the lingering death of starvation when young, if old often they are torn apart alive by predators. A hunter's bullet is relatively less bad.

The elk makes many noises. Warning bark, chirp for conversation, that high bugle that reverberates across mountainsides when I'm drifting off to sleep high in some wilderness.
