  •  That reads like a plotline from "House of Cards" (9+ / 0-)

Must be one hell of a story if told in full. That one's worth more than a diary...

    •  That was in the 1940s and all the people involved (6+ / 0-)

are now dead, and the papers were lost, so there is no way I could ever tell the story properly.  But I know for sure that Washington's a rougher town than many people think.

      •  Honestly, except for the suicide (5+ / 0-)

(which really is tragic), that all sounds straight out of Gore Vidal.  But then, when it came to Washingtonia, he knew whereof he wrote.

        •  It's a true story. It was a tragedy for many (1+ / 0-)

          people, including me.

The relative was my maternal grandfather, a great man, a hero in WW1, who taught me to read and write at age 4 (or probably a little earlier), whose career was destroyed by this.  DESTROYED!

          •  Oh, I believe it's a true story. (1+ / 0-)

Like all good fiction writers, Gore Vidal didn't make up stuff out of thin air!  No verisimilitude without verity!

          •  in fact, (0+ / 0-)

you never know: Vidal may have known the story too.  Didn't show up in his novels, but maybe in his plays . . .

            •  My mother was in touch with Gore (0+ / 0-)

Vidal, although not very deeply as far as I know, so that might be true.  I don't know.  My mother, bless her suicided soul, was a very flamboyant, and very wounded, genius.
