    The relative was my maternal grandfather, a great man, a hero in WW1, who taught me to read and write at age 4 (or probably a little earlier), whose career was destroyed by this.  DESTROYED!

      Like all good fiction writers, Gore Vidal didn't make up stuff out of thin air!  No verisimilitude without verity!

      you never know: Vidal may have known the story too.  Didn't show up in his novels, but maybe in his plays . . .

        Vidal, although not very deeply as far as I know, so that might be true.  I don't know.  My mother, bless her suicided soul, was a very flamboyant, and very wounded, genius.
