    That's exactly how I remember it, too:

    In the south, come as close as you want, but don't get too high. In the North, go as high as you want, but don't get too close.
    Who got to define what exactly was too high or too close was the point, of course.

    My parents were not big readers, and their library was small and random: best selling novels, the odd book on Jewish culture or opera, and things that other people had given them as gifts. Both Only in America and For 2c Plain were on the shelf, and they made a big impression on me as a preteen. Today, the only thing I could spontaneously remember of his work is this quote, which taught a young girl never to condescend to other people's faults until I'd examined my own.

    Ironically, I just did a quick search hoping to get the exact quote, and it's nowhere to be found. We'll just have to rely on our memories. And thanks to mspicata for the diary.
