    I don't think all the motivation is pernicious or oriented toward a specific goal. I would bet that there's a lot of academic, research-level fascination behind it, too; not necessarily behind the funding but behind the scientists and engineers involved.

    The GOP can't win on ideas. They can only win by lying, cheating, and stealing. So they do.

        I'm an arborist. I left computing over 20 years ago.

        But I am a fan of emergence and complexity theory, and I can imagine how scientists with relevant theoretical tools and research interests might find fascinating the prospect of researching massive datasets of social interaction much in the way that neuroscientists, I imagine, are fascinated by the structures and connections of the brain and their relationship to the conscious and unconscious.

        The fact that such things can be abused doesn't mean there's nothing of value nor worthy of study in them. Water can be used for water-boarding. So should we then regard water as something to be avoided at all costs?
