  •  It all seems to come back to (5+ / 0-)

    don't be a dick.

    •  Is there not a little double standard here? (0+ / 0-)

Why is it acceptable to call someone a dick, but gets HR'd if you call someone a pussy?

Maybe Dick means something else in American.

Dick is a vulgar slang word for a penis. It's also an insulting thing to call someone you don't like, especially a boy or man.
      •  In the political world, it's dual use. (0+ / 0-)

Tricky Dick Nixon for the older crowd.

Dick "Darth" Cheney for the youngins.

        •  And pussy has only one meaning? (1+ / 0-)

It seems to me that the use of Dick in DBAD, is exactly the same as calling someone a Prick, and has nothing to do with Cheney or Nixon.

Personally I don't give a shit if someone calls me a dick- I've been called far worse. I am just curious as to the justification for this dichotomy.

and it's his site. That being the case, the exception stays in place, no matter how out of place it may seem.

I think I'm going to propose either the substitution of "twit", which effectively means "unthinking", or use of the phrase "Think with your brains, dammit", as a gender neutral insult, to replace it.

At least half the future I've been expecting hasn't gotten here yet. Sigh.... (Yes, there's gender bias in my name; no, I wasn't thinking about it when I signed up. My apologies.)

            Here's how it works.

Who gets called 'pussies'?  Men.  Why?  Because it implies A) that they're feminine, and B) that being feminine is a bad thing.  That's why it's denigrating to women - it implies being feminine is bad.

Who gets called a 'dick'?  Anyone.  Calling someone a 'dick' does not mean that A) they're masculine, or B) Being masculine is bad.

The qualities connotated by 'dick' are not necessarily associated with being masculine, but the qualities connotated by 'pussy' are associated with being feminine.

I understand how that particular idiom might be difficult for non-Americans, or those who haven't been exposed to gender studies, though.
