Gays are not in retreat. The election of an African American President is not in "retreat." These are social issues that will be--and are being-decided by the generations to come.

You are being too pessimistic. And that is coming from a dyed-in the wool pessimist.  I live for pessimism, Gooserock.

we're not in retreat.  There are setbacks and when I was younger I went into spasms and raged at the heavens as they occurred but now age has given me an understanding of the two forward, one back ken referenced.  I hate it, it's painful, but much has been gained, too much to ever go back to that nightmare past.  Our children won't allow it, our grandchildren won't allow it.  They aren't us, people like ken and like me,10 years older than ken, they weren't born into a world of legal segregation.  They take for granted things we never dreamed.  We're seeing the ugly come out of the woodwork now, pent up racism released because a black man had the audacity to become President but the flip side is half this imperfect country voted him into that place and that is huge, that can't be taken back, this country showed not once but twice that it could be good.  It  could be good.
