    Well, guess what - that's what happened to grow plantations of "natural" vanilla beans (with "natural" in quotes because all current vanilla crops actually are genetically modified, they're subspecies of the original plant from Mexico from the 15th century, but whatever).

    Anyways, yeasts grow fine on glucose and / or fructose (and can be fairly easily adapted to grow on many hydrocarbon sources) - so they'd thrive on HFCS, which is plentiful.  If anything this use would compete with (quite idiotic) corn-based ethanol-for-fuel schemes.  Color me less than too depressed about that.

    But, getting back to ethanol from corn for fuel, the "holy grail" is to create cellulosidic ethanol from the waste parts of the corn.   Synthetic biology holds promise for creating organisms suited for doing this, thus making a really bad situation a little bit better.  But then a whole bunch of cows might not have enough to eat (but some would argue that these cows wouldn't be necessary if everybody became a vegetarian . . . .. ).
